t4012 assumed that it is okay to seek beyond the end of stdin. It is not,
and leads to an access violation (Windows speak for: segmentation fault)
with MinGW's dd.exe iff run in non-verbose mode.
Further, for some reason 'echo X | dd bs=1k seek=1' resulted in 2050 bytes
in this developer's setup instead of 1026.
So let's use a valid technique to generate 1024 NULs followed by X and a
line feed: a good ole' Perl script.

This works now that fast-export has been fixed to properly handle
refs that point to a commit that was not exported during the current
fast-export run.
This will be required by fast-export, when no commits were
exported, but the refs should be set, of course.

On Windows, all native APIs are Unicode-based. It is impossible to pass
legacy encoded byte arrays to a process via command line or environment
variables. Disable the tests that try to do so.
In t3901, most tests still work if we don't mess up the repository encoding
in setup, so don't switch to ISO-8859-1 on MinGW.
Note that i18n tests that do their encoding tricks via encoded files (such
as t3900) are not affected by this.

This happens only when the corresponding commits are not exported in
the current fast-export run. This can happen either when the relevant
commit is already marked, or when the commit is explicitly marked
as UNINTERESTING with a negative ref by another argument.
This breaks fast-export basec remote helpers.

On msysGit creating the post-rewrite.args file using 'echo' has different
line endings from the expected comparison. Using perl normalizes the line
endings for each generated file.

Git on Windows was made aware of the fact that sometimes a file may be
used by another process and so an operation may fail but the user might
be able to fix it and is asking for confirmation whether it should
retry.
This is implemented in a way that git only asks in case stdin and stderr
are attached to a tty. Unfortunately this seems to be misdetected
sometimes causing the testsuite to hang when git is waiting for a user
answer.
This patch works around the situation.

For a long time, this developer thought that Git's insistence that
pushing into the current branch is evil was completely merited.
Just for fun, the original patch tried to show people that Git is right
there, and that it causes more trouble than it does good when Git allows
you to try to update the working tree for fast-forwards, or to detach the
HEAD, depending on some config settings.
Surprisingly, the opposite was shown.
So here is the support for two new options you can give the config
variable receive.denyCurrentBranch:
'updateInstead':
Try to merge the working tree with the new tip of the branch
(which can lead to really horrible merge conflicts).
'detachInstead':
Detach the HEAD, thereby avoiding a disagreement between the
HEAD and the index (as well as the working tree), possibly
leaving the local user wondering how on earth her HEAD became
so detached.

The test intends to rebase a branchy history onto a later commit, but it
forgot to reset HEAD back to an earlier commit before it set up the side
branches. In the end, every "rebased" commit was only a fast-forward and
the 'rebase -p' did not change the commit graph at all. Insert the missing
checkout that moves to an earlier commit.

Commit 875b91b (diff --no-index: use strbuf for temporary pathnames,
2012-04-25) introduced a regression when using diff --no-index with
directories. When iterating through a directory, the switch to strbuf
from heap-allocated char arrays caused paths to form like 'dir/file1',
'dir/file1file2', rather than 'dir/file1', 'dir/file2' as expected.
Avoid this by resetting the paths variables to their original length
before each iteration.

In abe1998 ("git checkout -b: allow switching out of an unborn
branch"), a code-path overly-optimisticly assumed that a
branch-name was specified. This is not always the case, and as
a result a NULL-pointer was attempted printed to .git/HEAD.
This could lead to at least two different failure modes:
1) vsnprintf formated the NULL-string as something useful (e.g
"(null)")
2) vsnprintf crashed
Neither were very convenient for formatting a new HEAD-reference.
To fix this, reintroduce some strictness so we only take this
new codepath if a banch-name was specified.

There is no reason not to, as the user has to explicitly ask
for it, so we are not breaking compatibility by doing so. We
can do this simply by moving the "show_branch" flag into
the wt_status struct. As a bonus, this saves us from passing
it explicitly, simplifying the code.

When the "-z" option is given to status, we are supposed to
NUL-terminate each record. However, the "-b" code to show
the tracking branch did not respect this, and always ended
with a newline.

This puts delta resolving on each base on a separate thread, one base
cache per thread. Per-thread data is grouped in struct thread_local.
When running with nr_threads == 1, no pthreads calls are made. The
system essentially runs in non-thread mode.
An experiment on a Xeon 24 core machine with git.git shows that
performance does not increase proportional to the number of cores. So
by default, we use maximum 3 cores. Some numbers with --threads from 1

"git log -g --format='%gd: %gs' refs/stash" (or worse yet, the same
command line with refs/stash@{0}) was affected by log.date=iso settings
and failed to show stash@{0}, stash@{1},... in the output. Clarify the
DWIM rules to give the most precedence to how the starting point is
specified (i.e. stash@{0} vs stash@{now}), and then use the presense
of "--date=<format>" command line option as the secondary clue to decide
whether reflog entries are shown with numbers or timestamps.

Introduction of opt->date_mode_explicit was a step in the right direction,
but lost that crucial bit at the very end of the callchain, and the callee
could not tell an explicitly specified "I want *date* but in default format"
from the built-in default value passed when there was no --date specified.
