This topic branch teaches the project generator to generate a Visual
Studio solution, ready to be opened in Visual Studio 2010 or later.
The idea, of course, is to let some automatic build job generate and
commit the project files with
make MSVC=1 vcxproj
and then (force-)push to a special-purpose branch.
The major part of this branch thicket concerns itself not only with
generating the Visual Studio project files, but making sure that the
user can then run the test suite from a regular Git Bash (i.e. *not*
requiring a Git for Windows SDK), e.g. by running
cd t
prove --timer --jobs 15 ./t[0-9]*.sh

This topic branch adds the (experimental) --stdin/-z options to `git
reset`. Those patches are still under review in the upstream Git project,
but are already merged in their experimental form into Git for Windows'
`master` branch, in preparation for a MinGit-only release.

These fixes were necessary for Sverre Rabbelier's remote-hg to work,

Ever since 457f08a (git-rev-list: add --bisect-vars option.,
2007-03-21), Git's source code uses the following trick to fool GCC into
*not* warning about uninitialized values:
int value = value;
We use this trick to silence the "warning: ‘x’ is used uninitialized in
this function [-Wuninitialized]" when the variables are not really used
uninitialized (but it is hard for the compiler to determine that).
This trick works well for GCC, and even Clang seems to appease that
workaround.
Not so Visual C. It does realize that this is just a trick to fool it,
and it simply refuses to be fooled.
The only way to silence the warning for Visual C would be to write
something like this:
#pragma warning(suppress: 4700)
int value;
Obviously this is not portable, and neither is that trick that fools
GCC. So let's just introduce a new macro that continues to fool GCC, but
simply initializes the values everywhere else.

Teach "add" to use preload-index and fscache features
to improve performance on very large repositories.
During an "add", a call is made to run_diff_files()
which calls check_remove() for each index-entry. This
calls lstat(). On Windows, the fscache code intercepts
the lstat() calls and builds a private cache using the
FindFirst/FindNext routines, which are much faster.
Somewhat independent of this, is the preload-index code
which distributes some of the start-up costs across
multiple threads.
We need to keep the call to read_cache() before parsing the
pathspecs (and hence cannot use the pathspecs to limit any preload)
because parse_pathspec() is using the index to determine whether a
pathspec is, in fact, in a submodule. If we would not read the index
first, parse_pathspec() would not error out on a path that is inside
a submodule, and t7400-submodule-basic.sh would fail with
not ok 47 - do not add files from a submodule
We still want the nice preload performance boost, though, so we simply
call read_cache_preload(&pathspecs) after parsing the pathspecs.

Just like with other Git commands, this option makes it read the paths
from the standard input. It comes in handy when resetting many, many
paths at once and wildcards are not an option (e.g. when the paths are
generated by a tool).
Note: we first parse the entire list and perform the actual reset action
only in a second phase. Not only does this make things simpler, it also
helps performance, as do_diff_cache() traverses the index and the
(sorted) pathspecs in simultaneously to avoid unnecessary lookups.
This feature is marked experimental because it is still under review in
the upstream Git project.

This is a brown paper bag. When adding the tests, we actually failed
to verify that the config variable is heeded in git-init at all. And
when changing the original patch that marked the .git/ directory as
hidden after reading the config, it was lost on this developer that
the new code would use the hide_dotfiles variable before the config
was read.
The fix is obvious: read the (limited, pre-init) config *before*
creating the .git/ directory.

When a third-party tool periodically runs `git status` in order to keep
track of the state of the working tree, it is a bad idea to lock the
index: it might interfere with interactive commands executed by the
user, e.g. when the user wants to commit files.
Git for Windows introduced the `--no-lock-index` option a long time ago
to fix that (it made it into Git for Windows v2.9.2(3)) by simply
avoiding to write that file.
The downside is that the periodic `git status` calls will be a little
bit more wasteful because they may have to refresh the index repeatedly,
only to throw away the updates when it exits. This cannot really be
helped, though, as tools wanting to get a periodic update of the status
have no way to predict when the user may want to lock the index herself.
Sadly, a competing approach was submitted (by somebody who apparently
has less work on their plate than this maintainer) that made it into
v2.15.0 but is *different*: instead of a `git status`-only option, it is
an option that comes *before* the Git command and is called differently,
too.
Let's give previous users a chance to upgrade to newer Git for Windows
versions by handling the `--no-lock-index` option, still, though with a
big fat warning.

On Windows, files cannot be removed nor renamed if there are still
handles held by a process. To remedy that, we introduced the
close_all_packs() function.
Earlier, we made sure that the packs are released just before `git gc`
is spawned, in case that gc wants to remove no-longer needed packs.
But this developer forgot that gc itself also needs to let go of packs,
e.g. when consolidating all packs via the --aggressive option.
Likewise, `git repack -d` wants to delete obsolete packs and therefore
needs to close all pack handles, too.

When calling `git fast-export a..a b` when a and b refer to the same
commit, nothing would be exported, and an incorrect reset line would
be printed for b ('from :0').

For performance reasons `stdout` is not unbuffered by default. That leads
to problems if after printing to `stdout` a read on `stdin` is performed.
For that reason interactive commands like `git clean -i` do not function
properly anymore if the `stdout` is not flushed by `fflush(stdout)` before
trying to read from `stdin`.
In the case of `git clean -i` all reads on `stdin` were preceded by a
`fflush(stdout)` call.

Add a macro to mark code sections that only read from the file system,
along with a config option and documentation.
This facilitates implementation of relatively simple file system level
caches without the need to synchronize with the file system.

Once upon a time, git-clone would refuse to write into a
directory that it did not itself create. The cleanup
routines for a failed clone could therefore just remove the
git and worktree dirs completely.
In 55892d2398 (Allow cloning to an existing empty directory,
2009-01-11), we learned to write into an existing directory.
Which means that doing:
mkdir foo
git clone will-fail foo
ends up deleting foo. This isn't a huge catastrophe, since
by definition foo must be empty. But it's somewhat
confusing; we should leave the filesystem as we found it.
Because we know that the only directory we'll write into is
an empty one, we can handle this case by just passing the
KEEP_TOPLEVEL flag to our recursive delete (if we could
write into populated directories, we'd have to keep track of
what we wrote and what we did not, which would be much
harder).
Note that we need to handle the work-tree and git-dir
separately, though, as only one might exist (and the new
tests in t5600 cover all cases).

Two parts of git-clone's setup logic check whether a
directory exists, and they both call stat directly with the
same scratch "struct stat" buffer. Let's pull that into a
helper, which has a few advantages:
- it makes the purpose of the stat calls more obvious
- it makes it clear that we don't care about the
information in "buf" remaining valid
- if we later decide to make the check more robust (e.g.,
complaining about non-directories), we can do it in one
place
Note that we could just use file_exists() for this, which
has identical code. But we specifically care about
directories, so this future-proofs us against that function
later getting more picky about seeing actual files.

The leak_pending flag is so awkward to use that multiple comments had to
be added around each occurrence. We only use it for remembering the
commits whose marks we have to clear after checking if the old HEAD is
detached. This is easy, though: We need to do that for the old commit,
the new one -- and for all refs.
Don't bother tracking exactly which commits need their flags cleared,
just nuke all we have in-core. This change is safe because refs can
point at anything, so other program parts can't depend on any kept flags
anyway. And since all refs are loaded we have to basically deal with
all commits anyway, so performance should not be negatively impacted.

The man page of the "git describe" command explains the expected
output when using the --all option, i.e. the full reference path is
shown, including heads/ or tags/ prefix.
When 212945d4a8 ("Teach git-describe
to verify annotated tag names before output") made Git favor the
embedded name of annotated tags, it accidentally changed the output
format when the --all flag is given, only printing the tag's name
without the prefix.
Check if --all was specified and re-add the "tags/" prefix for this
special case to fix the regresssion.

Sometimes users are given a hash of an object and they want to
identify it further (ex.: Use verify-pack to find the largest blobs,
but what are these? or [1])
When describing commits, we try to anchor them to tags or refs, as these
are conceptually on a higher level than the commit. And if there is no ref
or tag that matches exactly, we're out of luck. So we employ a heuristic
to make up a name for the commit. These names are ambiguous, there might
be different tags or refs to anchor to, and there might be different
path in the DAG to travel to arrive at the commit precisely.
When describing a blob, we want to describe the blob from a higher layer
as well, which is a tuple of (commit, deep/path) as the tree objects
involved are rather uninteresting. The same blob can be referenced by
multiple commits, so how we decide which commit to use? This patch
implements a rather naive approach on this: As there are no back pointers
from blobs to commits in which the blob occurs, we'll start walking from
any tips available, listing the blobs in-order of the commit and once we
found the blob, we'll take the first commit that listed the blob. For
example
git describe --tags v0.99:Makefile
conversion-901-g7672db20c2:Makefile
tells us the Makefile as it was in v0.99 was introduced in commit 7672db20.
The walking is performed in reverse order to show the introduction of a
blob rather than its last occurrence.

Prior to commit a2d725b7bd ("Use an external program to implement
fetching with curl", 2009-08-05), if Git was compiled with NO_CURL, the
get_refs_list and fetch methods in struct transport might not be
populated, hence the checks in clone and fetch. After that commit, all
transports populate get_refs_list and fetch, making the checks in clone
and fetch redundant. Remove those checks.
