cfeed9c61c Merge branch 'reset-stdin'
This topic branch adds the (experimental) --stdin/-z options to `git
reset`. Those patches are still under review in the upstream Git project,
but are already merged in their experimental form into Git for Windows'
`master` branch, in preparation for a MinGit-only release.

f600b71c7b Merge branch 'program-data-config'
This branch introduces support for reading the "Windows-wide" Git
configuration from `%PROGRAMDATA%\Git\config`. As these settings are
intended to be shared between *all* Git-related software, that config
file takes an even lower precedence than `$(prefix)/etc/gitconfig`.

0f8b877df7 Remove support for XP specific config location
Current Git for Windows supports an additional configuration location
for system setting. On contemporary versionws of Windows this is
$PROGRAMDATA/Git/config. But XP does not know about $PRORGRAMDATA so
$ALLUSERSPROFILE/Application Data/Git/config was used.

XP itself is EOL for quite some time and Git for Windows ceased to
support it officially with version 2.10.0 (release 3 Sep 2016).

2004c7e7b6 Clarify the location of the Windows-specific ProgramData config
On Windows, there is no (single) `/etc/` directory. To address that, in
conjunction with the libgit2 project, Git for Windows introduced yet
another level of system-wide config files, located in C:\ProgramData
(and the equivalent on Windows XP).

Let's spell this out in the documentation.

This closes https://github.com/git-for-windows/git/pull/470 (because
there was no reaction in three months in that Pull Request).

18d05925e9 Windows: add support for a Windows-wide configuration
Between the libgit2 and the Git for Windows project, there has been a
discussion how we could share Git configuration to avoid duplication (or
worse: skew).

Earlier, libgit2 was nice enough to just re-use Git for Windows'

	C:\Program Files (x86)\Git\etc\gitconfig

but with the upcoming Git for Windows 2.x, there would be more paths to
search, as we will have 64-bit and 32-bit versions, and the
corresponding config files will be in %PROGRAMFILES%\Git\mingw64\etc and
...\mingw32\etc, respectively.

Worse: there are portable Git for Windows versions out there which live
in totally unrelated directories, still.

Therefore we came to a consensus to use `%PROGRAMDATA%\Git\config` as the
location for shared Git settings that are of wider interest than just Git
for Windows.

On XP, there is no %PROGRAMDATA%, therefore we need to use
"%ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Application Data\Git\config" in those setups.

Of course, the configuration in `%PROGRAMDATA%\Git\config` has the
widest reach, therefore it must take the lowest precedence, i.e. Git for
Windows can still override settings in its `etc/gitconfig` file.

dbdd8969d3 Win32: support long paths
Windows paths are typically limited to MAX_PATH = 260 characters, even
though the underlying NTFS file system supports paths up to 32,767 chars.
This limitation is also evident in Windows Explorer, cmd.exe and many
other applications (including IDEs).

Particularly annoying is that most Windows APIs return bogus error codes
if a relative path only barely exceeds MAX_PATH in conjunction with the
current directory, e.g. ERROR_PATH_NOT_FOUND / ENOENT instead of the
infinitely more helpful ERROR_FILENAME_EXCED_RANGE / ENAMETOOLONG.

Many Windows wide char APIs support longer than MAX_PATH paths through the
file namespace prefix ('\\?\' or '\\?\UNC\') followed by an absolute path.
Notable exceptions include functions dealing with executables and the
current directory (CreateProcess, LoadLibrary, Get/SetCurrentDirectory) as
well as the entire shell API (ShellExecute, SHGetSpecialFolderPath...).

Introduce a handle_long_path function to check the length of a specified
path properly (and fail with ENAMETOOLONG), and to optionally expand long
paths using the '\\?\' file namespace prefix. Short paths will not be
modified, so we don't need to worry about device names (NUL, CON, AUX).

Contrary to MSDN docs, the GetFullPathNameW function doesn't seem to be
limited to MAX_PATH (at least not on Win7), so we can use it to do the
heavy lifting of the conversion (translate '/' to '\', eliminate '.' and
'..', and make an absolute path).

Add long path error checking to xutftowcs_path for APIs with hard MAX_PATH
limit.

Add a new MAX_LONG_PATH constant and xutftowcs_long_path function for APIs
that support long paths.

While improved error checking is always active, long paths support must be
explicitly enabled via 'core.longpaths' option. This is to prevent end
users to shoot themselves in the foot by checking out files that Windows
Explorer, cmd/bash or their favorite IDE cannot handle.

Test suite:
Test the case is when the full pathname length of a dir is close
to 260 (MAX_PATH).

dc1f862a86 http: add support for selecting SSL backends at runtime
The Pull Request at https://github.com/curl/curl/pull/1601 adds support
for choosing the SSL backend at runtime to cURL, and will hopefully be
merged before version 7.56.0 comes out.

Git for Windows will ship with those patches backported to 7.54.1 (and
come August 9th, 2017, 7.55.0 and later).

This patch adds the Git side of that feature: by setting http.sslBackend
to "openssl" or "schannel", Git for Windows can now choose the SSL
backend at runtime.

This comes in handy because Secure Channel ("schannel") is the native
Windows solution, accessing the Windows Credential Store, thereby
allowing for enterprise-wide management of certificates. For historical
reasons, Git for Windows needs to support OpenSSL still, as it has
previously been the only supported SSL backend in Git for Windows for
almost a decade.

656b434551 reset: support the experimental --stdin option
Just like with other Git commands, this option makes it read the paths
from the standard input. It comes in handy when resetting many, many
paths at once and wildcards are not an option (e.g. when the paths are
generated by a tool).

Note: we first parse the entire list and perform the actual reset action
only in a second phase. Not only does this make things simpler, it also
helps performance, as do_diff_cache() traverses the index and the
(sorted) pathspecs in simultaneously to avoid unnecessary lookups.

This feature is marked experimental because it is still under review in
the upstream Git project.

f23cdb7357 status: carry the --no-lock-index option for backwards-compatibility
When a third-party tool periodically runs `git status` in order to keep
track of the state of the working tree, it is a bad idea to lock the
index: it might interfere with interactive commands executed by the
user, e.g. when the user wants to commit files.

Git for Windows introduced the `--no-lock-index` option a long time ago
to fix that (it made it into Git for Windows v2.9.2(3)) by simply
avoiding to write that file.

The downside is that the periodic `git status` calls will be a little
bit more wasteful because they may have to refresh the index repeatedly,
only to throw away the updates when it exits. This cannot really be
helped, though, as tools wanting to get a periodic update of the status
have no way to predict when the user may want to lock the index herself.

Sadly, a competing approach was submitted (by somebody who apparently
has less work on their plate than this maintainer) that made it into
v2.15.0 but is *different*: instead of a `git status`-only option, it is
an option that comes *before* the Git command and is called differently,
too.

Let's give previous users a chance to upgrade to newer Git for Windows
versions by handling the `--no-lock-index` option, still, though with a
big fat warning.

3f950a2619 Config option to disable side-band-64k for transport
Since commit 0c499ea60f the send-pack builtin uses the side-band-64k
capability if advertised by the server.

Unfortunately this breaks pushing over the dump git protocol if used
over a network connection.

The detailed reasons for this breakage are (by courtesy of Jeff Preshing,
quoted from ttps://groups.google.com/d/msg/msysgit/at8D7J-h7mw/eaLujILGUWoJ):
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
MinGW wraps Windows sockets in CRT file descriptors in order to mimic the
functionality of POSIX sockets. This causes msvcrt.dll to treat sockets as
Installable File System (IFS) handles, calling ReadFile, WriteFile,
DuplicateHandle and CloseHandle on them. This approach works well in simple
cases on recent versions of Windows, but does not support all usage patterns.
In particular, using this approach, any attempt to read & write concurrently
on the same socket (from one or more processes) will deadlock in a scenario
where the read waits for a response from the server which is only invoked after
the write. This is what send_pack currently attempts to do in the use_sideband
codepath.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

The new config option "sendpack.sideband" allows to override the side-band-64k
capability of the server, and thus makes the dump git protocol work.

Other transportation methods like ssh and http/https still benefit from
the sideband channel, therefore the default value of "sendpack.sideband"
is still true.

674fb4862e mingw: unset PERL5LIB by default
Git for Windows ships with its own Perl interpreter, and insists on
using it, so it will most likely wreak havoc if PERL5LIB is set before
launching Git.

Let's just unset that environment variables when spawning processes.

To make this feature extensible (and overrideable), there is a new
config setting `core.unsetenvvars` that allows specifying a
comma-separated list of names to unset before spawning processes.

c7620bd0f3 upload-pack: disable object filtering when disabled by config
When upload-pack gained partial clone support (v2.17.0-rc0~132^2~12,
2017-12-08), it was guarded by the uploadpack.allowFilter config item
to allow server operators to control when they start supporting it.

That config item didn't go far enough, though: it controls whether the
'filter' capability is advertised, but if a (custom) client ignores
the capability advertisement and passes a filter specification anyway,
the server would handle that despite allowFilter being false.

This is particularly significant if a security bug is discovered in
this new experimental partial clone code. Installations without
uploadpack.allowFilter ought not to be affected since they don't
intend to support partial clone, but they would be swept up into being
vulnerable.

Simplify and limit the attack surface by making uploadpack.allowFilter
disable the feature, not just the advertisement of it.

In 1ada5020b3 ("stash: use stash_push for no verb form", 2017-02-28),
when the pathspec argument was introduced in 'git stash', that was also
documented. However I forgot to remove an extra square bracket after
the '--message' argument, even though the square bracket should have
been after the pathspec argument (where it was also added).

Remove the extra square bracket after the '--message' argument, to show
that the pathspec argument should be used with the 'push' verb.

While the pathspec argument can be used without the push verb, that's a
special case described later in the man page, and removing the first extra
square bracket instead of the second one makes the synopis easier to
understand.

b635ed97a0 doc/gitattributes: mention non-recursive behavior
The gitattributes documentation claims that the pattern
rules are largely the same as for gitignore. However, the
rules for recursion are different.

In an ideal world, we would make them the same (if for
nothing else than consistency and simplicity), but that
would create backwards compatibility issues. For some
discussion, see this thread:

  https://public-inbox.org/git/slrnkldd3g.1l4.jan@majutsushi.net/

But let's at least document the differences instead of
actively misleading the user by claiming that they're the
same.
