Git for Windows' MSYS2 runtime was just adjusted to kill processes
gently, by injecting a thread that calls ExitProcess(). In case of
signals (such as when handling Ctrl+C in a MinTTY window), the exit code
is 128 + sign_no, as expected by Git's source code.
However, as there is no POSIX signal handling on Windows, no signal
handlers are called. Instead, functions registered via atexit() are
called. We work around that by testing the exit code explicitly.
This fixes the Git for Windows side of the bug where interrupting `git
clone https://...` would send the spawned-off `git remote-https` process
into the background instead of interrupting it, i.e. the clone would
continue and its progress would be reported mercilessly to the console
window without the user being able to do anything about it (short of
firing up the task manager and killing the appropriate task manually).

The TerminateProcess() function does not actually leave the child
processes any chance to perform any cleanup operations. This is bad
insofar as Git itself expects its signal handlers to run.
A symptom is e.g. a left-behind .lock file that would not be left behind
if the same operation was run, say, on Linux.
To remedy this situation, we use an obscure trick: we inject a thread
into the process that needs to be killed and to let that thread run the
ExitProcess() function with the desired exit status. Thanks J Wyman for
describing this trick.
The advantage is that the ExitProcess() function lets the atexit
handlers run. While this is still different from what Git expects (i.e.
running a signal handler), in practice Git sets up signal handlers and
atexit handlers that call the same code to clean up after itself.
In case that the gentle method to terminate the process failed, we still
fall back to calling TerminateProcess(), but in that case we now also
make sure that processes spawned by the spawned process are terminated;
TerminateProcess() does not give the spawned process a chance to do so
itself.
Please note that this change only affects how Git for Windows tries to
terminate processes spawned by Git's own executables. Third-party
software that *calls* Git and wants to terminate it *still* need to make
sure to imitate this gentle method, otherwise this patch will not have
any effect.

This will clone into a new directory C:\upstream-git, in line with how
Windows interprets absolute paths.

This topic branch allows us to skip the gettext initialization
when the locale directory does not even exist.
This saves 150ms out of 210ms for a simply `git version` call on
Windows, and it most likely will help scripts that call out to
`git.exe` hundreds of times.

We newly handle isatty() by special-casing the stdin/stdout/stderr file
descriptors, caching the return value. However, we missed the case where
dup2() overrides the respective file descriptor.
That poses a problem e.g. where the `show` builtin asks for a pager very
early, the `setup_pager()` function sets the pager depending on the
return value of `isatty()` and then redirects stdout. Subsequently,
`cmd_log_init_finish()` calls `setup_pager()` *again*. What should
happen now is that `isatty()` reports that stdout is *not* a TTY and
consequently stdout should be left alone.
Let's override dup2() to handle this appropriately.

A change between versions 2.4.1 and 2.6.0 of the MSYS2 runtime modified
how Cygwin's runtime (and hence Git for Windows' MSYS2 runtime
derivative) handles locales: d16a56306d (Consolidate wctomb/mbtowc calls
for POSIX-1.2008, 2016-07-20).
An unintended side-effect is that "cold-calling" into the POSIX
emulation will start with a locale based on the current code page,
something that Git for Windows is very ill-prepared for, as it expects
to be able to pass a command-line containing non-ASCII characters to the
shell without having those characters munged.
One symptom of this behavior: when `git clone` or `git fetch` shell out
to call `git-upload-pack` with a path that contains non-ASCII
characters, the shell tried to interpret the entire command-line
(including command-line parameters) as executable path, which obviously
must fail.

The fix we introduced in Git for Windows will be made obsolete by a more
general fix that has been already accepted into upstream Git's `next`
branch.
But we still can introduce a regression test that verifies that this bug
will be caught very quickly, if reintroduced.

The issue seems to be related to redirection via a pipe, but it is really
hard to diagnose, what with git.exe (a non-MSYS2 program) calling a Perl
script (which is executed by an MSYS2 Perl), piping into another MSYS2
program.
As hunting time is scarce these days, simply work around this for now and
leave the real diagnosis and resolution for later.

On Windows, UNC paths are a very convenient way to share data, and
alternates are all about sharing data.
We fixed a bug where alternates specifying UNC paths were not handled
properly, and it is high time that we add a regression test to ensure
that this bug is not reintroduced.

Teach register_rename_src() to see if new file pair
can simply be appended to the rename_src[] array before
performing the binary search to find the proper insertion
point.
This is a performance optimization. This routine is called
during run_diff_files in status and the caller is iterating
over the sorted index, so we should expect to be able to
append in the normal case. The existing insert logic is
preserved so we don't have to assume that, but simply take
advantage of it if possible.

If the user has specified '--no-lock-index' when calling git-status, it only seems reasonable that the user intends that option to be carried through to any child forks/procs as well. Currently, the '--no-lock-status' call is lost when submodules are checked. This change places the desired option into the environment, which is in turn passed down to all subsequent children.
With cmd_status checking for '--no-lock--status' first from args then from environment, we're able to keep the option set in all children.

This fixes the compilation, actually, as we still did not make the jump to
post-Windows XP completely: we still compile with _WIN32_WINNT set to
0x0502 (which corresponds to Windows Server 2003 and is technically
greater than Windows XP's 0x0501).
However, GetTickCount64() is only available starting with Windows
Vista/Windows Server 2008.
Let's just lazy-load the function, which should also help Git for Windows
contributors who want to reinstate Windows XP support.

From Visual Studio 2015 Code Analysis: Warning C28159 Consider using
'GetTickCount64' instead of 'GetTickCount'.
Reason: GetTickCount overflows roughly every 49 days. Code that does not
take that into account can loop indefinitely. GetTickCount64 operates on
64 bit values and does not have that problem.

This topic branch teaches the project generator to generate a Visual
Studio solution, ready to be opened in Visual Studio 2010 or later.
The idea, of course, is to let some automatic build job generate and
commit the project files with
make MSVC=1 vcxproj
and then (force-)push to a special-purpose branch.
The major part of this branch thicket concerns itself not only with
generating the Visual Studio project files, but making sure that the
user can then run the test suite from a regular Git Bash (i.e. *not*
requiring a Git for Windows SDK), e.g. by running
cd t
prove --timer --jobs 15 ./t[0-9]*.sh

When developing Git for Windows, we always have to ensure that we do not
break any non-Windows platforms, e.g. by introducing Windows-specific code
into the platform-independent source code.
At other times, it is necessary to test whether a bug is Windows-specific
or not, in order to send the bug report to the correct place. Having
access to a Linux-based Git comes in really handy in such a situation.
Vagrant offers a painless way to install and use a defined Linux
development environment on Windows (and other Operating Systems). We offer
a Vagrantfile to that end for two reasons:
1) To allow Windows users to gain the full power of Linux' Git
2) To offer users an easy path to verify that the issue they are about
to report is really a Windows-specific issue; otherwise they would
need to report it to git@vger.kernel.org instead.
Using it is easy: Download and install https://www.virtualbox.org/, then
download and install https://www.vagrantup.com/, then direct your
command-line window to the Git source directory containing the Vagrantfile
and run the commands:
vagrant up
vagrant ssh

For regular debugging, it is pretty helpful when a debug assertion in a
running application triggers a window that offers to start the debugger.
However, when running the test suite, it is not so helpful, in
particular when the debug assertions are then suppressed anyway because
we disable the invalid parameter checking (via invalidcontinue.obj, see
the comment in config.mak.uname about that object for more information).
So let's simply disable that window in Debug Mode (it is already
disabled in Release Mode).

It is a real old anachronism from the Cogito days to have a
.git/branches/ directory. And to have tests that ensure that Cogito
users can migrate away from using that directory.
But so be it, let's continue testing it.
Let's make sure, however, that git init does not need to create that
directory.
This bug was noticed when testing with templates that had been
pre-committed, skipping the empty branches/ directory of course because
Git does not track empty directories.

Git's source code wants to be able to close() the same file descriptor
multiple times, ignoring the error returned by the second call (and the
ones after that), or to access the osfhandle of an already-closed stdout,
among other things that the UCRT does not like.
Simply linking invalidcontinue.obj allows such usage without resorting to
Debug Assertions (or exiting with exit code 9 in Release Mode).
Let's add a note so we don't forget, as suggested by Jeff Hostetler.

When compiling with Visual Studio, the projects' names are identical to
the executables modulo the extensions. Which means that the bin-wrappers
*need* to target the .exe files lest they try to execute directories.

MS Visual C suggests that the construct

The short and sweet PREFIX can be confused when used in many places.
Rename both usages to better describe their purpose. EXEC_CMD_PREFIX is
used in full to disambiguate it from the nearby GIT_EXEC_PATH.
The PREFIX in sideband.c, while nominally independant of the exec_cmd
PREFIX, does reside within libgit[1], so the definitions would clash
when taken together with a PREFIX given on the command line for use by
exec_cmd.c.
Noticed when compiling Git for Windows using MSVC/Visual Studio [1] which
reports the conflict beteeen the command line definition and the
definition in sideband.c within the libgit project.
[1] the libgit functions are brought into a single sub-project
within the Visual Studio construction script provided in contrib,
and hence uses a single command for both exec_cmd.c and sideband.c.

With the recent update in efee955 (gpg-interface: check gpg signature
creation status, 2016-06-17), we ask GPG to send all status updates to
stderr, and then catch the stderr in an strbuf.
But GPG might fail, and send error messages to stderr. And we simply
do not show them to the user.
Even worse: this swallows any interactive prompt for a passphrase. And
detaches stderr from the tty so that the passphrase cannot be read.
So while the first problem could be fixed (by printing the captured
stderr upon error), the second problem cannot be easily fixed, and
presents a major regression.
So let's just revert commit efee9553a4.
